In 1947, a Norwegian explorer and writer named Thor Heyerdahl set out on a raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands to prove that the ancient Polynesians could have travelled from New Zealand to South America on just a raft without any sort of technical help.
Named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, for whom “Kon-Tiki” became a legend of sorts and now you would be surprised that there is also the IWC sponsored Plastiki expedition which is inspired by the Kon-Tiki. It is a 8,000 nautical mile voyage from San Francisco to Sydney in a boat constructed from 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles.
The idea was to use the nautical journey as a way of highlighting the way we indiscriminately throw plastic bottles into the sea. Instead, we could use the same plastic bottles after recycling them.
The crew was led by David de Rothschild and they all wore spiffy dresses by IWC Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition “Adventure Ecologyâ€. Billions of bottles are disposed off each month around the world leading to degradation of the environment.
