Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden Reopens in Its 24th Year

Hotel made of ice is an interesting concept that was first tried out in Jukkasjärvi, 120 miles above the Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden. It has reopened this winter again and is celebrating its 24th year. The temperature there is currently -31F. The Icehotel, every year invites artists from around the world to design the hotel’s 13 suites. They take almost a month to get the suites ready for the guests. The highlight last year was a suite designed with a Star Trek theme by Christian Strömqvist and Karl-Johan Ekeroth of PINPIN Studios. This year, the designer duo they have designed a suite based on what they call Frankenstein-esque art.

The Designer Suites Cost $275 or More a Night

They have named the suite ‘Its Alive’. They have designed a visually exciting scenography like a laboratory of a crazy scientist, complete with mysterious gadgets, huge tesla coils, a hatch in the ceiling and a bed where the monster can come alive. But the ambience of the room is not scary but humoristic and positive. The designers claim that living in the suite is sure to be a thrilling experience. Christine and Natalie Close have created a pole dancing bear in their suite. Mind the Gap” suite by Marcus Dillistone & Magdalena Ã…kerström is designed like a subway station. The tariff for these specially designed suites start at $275 a night.

Icehotel is Rebuilt in November Every Year

The Icehotel has a total of 80 rooms and besides the art suites there are rooms in several categories. A simple snow room will cost you $195 and a Deluxe Suite by MINI which boasts of an in-room sauna and 20 tons of extra ice will cost a significant $2,060. If you don’t want to stay in an ice room then you can opt for normal warm rooms which cost $175 onwards. It takes 1,000 tons of Torne River ice and 30,000 tons of “snice”, a mixture of snow and ice that strengthens the structure, to build the hotel every year. The construction of the hotel starts in November every year and opens in December and closes in April when ice starts melting and going back to the Tome River.
