A bookstore in Eumundi, Australia has sold a limited edition copy of photographer Helmut Newton’s works for a whopping $7,000. It isn’t often that you hear of a photographer with a taste for eroticism commanding such formidable prices. The Helmut Newton book in question features the photographer’s most iconic images spread over 400 pages. The book was purchased by an Australian collector who has not been identified.
The 400-page Helmut Newton Sumo was sold by the Eumundi-based Berkelouw Books. Paul Berkelouw of Berkelouw Books admitted that this was Newton’s most prized collection. According to Berkelouw, only 1,000 original copies of this book were printed. Each copy bears the photographer’s signature.
Berkelouw also said that Newton was among the best fashion photographers of the twentieth century. Newton, entrenched himself in the fashion industry of the 1970s and ’80s thanks to his edgy photographs. Eroticism merged with art in many of the German-Australian photographer’s images.
The part-Jewish, part-American Newton escaped from Nazi Germany in 1938. He briefly lived in Chile and Singapore before moving to and settling in Australia. In time, Newton became an acclaimed fashion photographer. Many of his photographs also have a touch of the erotic. Newton was known for his range of erotic photographs. His studies of nude women have gained much critical appreciation over the years.
Helmut Newton’s Sumo is not just another compilation of photographs, however. Each copy weighs about 30 kilos. Is it any wonder that each copy comes with a custom-made stand as well?
