Hancock Shaker Village celebrates it’s golden jubilee

If by any chance you come to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, do visit the Hancock Shaker Village, which has been a living history museum for the past fifty years. For a long span of almost 170 years (1790 to 1960), the spot served as a Shaker community. It was then transformed into a National Historic Landmark nestled between acres and acres of farms and woods.

It also houses a vast collection of many of the original Shaker art, furniture, textiles, tools, and other objects. This Village consists of 18 important buildings, which include the Round Stone Barn and a modern Visit Centre. All through the Village one can see Shaker designs that represent the Shaker craft and the Shaker way of life. As part of the museum’s golden jubilee celebrations, some celebrities were requested to serve as guest curators.

So now guest curators such as designer Michael Graves, television show host Al Roker, furniture maker Thomas Moser, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and film director Ken Burns will be answering questions like: “If you could pick any Shaker creation that for you, best illustrates the Shakers’ enduring influence, what would it be and why?” By paying $17 per adult, one will be able to visit the site till October31st.
