There is a treat waiting for rare car lovers at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. The property which has had the honour of having a visit by the President and the First Lady, will be showcasing a rare car from the earliest days of motoring. The 1913 Stevens-Duryea Model “C-Six” seven-passenger touring car will be displayed on May 20 at Antler Hill Village.
The car is supposed to be one of only ten of its kind in the world and was once was owned by George Vanderbilt. Though you won’t be able to touch the vehicle in order to get a feel of it, but you will at least get to see it up close. Vanderbilts had a long affair with all kinds of automobiles. George Vanderbilt wrote to his friend William Field while traveling in Europe, that automobiles made “traveling a different thing and simply a natural transition instead of an effort.”
Vanderbilt had traded his 1912 Stevens-Duryea Model “Y” for a 1913 Stevens-Duryea Model “C-Six” seven-passenger touring car. Vanderbilt was so much into his cars that he got a license for himself which was rare in his days as most people got chauffeurs to drive theirs cars. By 1919, both Mrs. Vanderbilt and Cornelia, George and Edith’s only daughter, were driving quite unusual for those times, since women rarely drove in those days.
