Football players command big money and the transfer season for European club always has the potential to throw up a new record. This season, Gareth Bale the Welsh football star has set a new world record by becoming the most expensive football player in history. Real Madrid, the high profile Spanish club has got him transferred from Spur against a fee of £85.3 million which is approximately $132.7 million. It is a £300,000 per week deal which will run for six years. The previous record was held by Cristiano Ronaldo who had received a deal of £80 million ($108 million) to opt for a transfer in 2009.
Bale Expressed His Gratitude for Making Him a Top Footballer
The record breaking deal was announced by Real Madrid officials at the Bernabeu. 24 year old Bale was presented to the Madrid fans through a media conference. Bale was understandably on the top of the world as he admitted that it was a dream come true for him. He said that he is looking forward to the next exciting chapter in my life, playing football for Real Madrid. However he expressed his gratitude for his earlier clubs that helped build his football career. He credited both Southampton and Spurs for making him the footballer he is today. He pointed out that they stood by him during some of the tougher times and provided the environment for him to grow as a footballer.
Bale Scored 26 Goals Last Season and was Declared Player of the Year
Bale declared that he had six very happy years at Tottenham but the time is now right to say goodbye. Last season was particularly glorious for Bale as he scored 26 goals for his club and was declared the ‘Player of the Year’ by both the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’. It is this coveted title that brought the spotlight on him. When the talk of the transfer first started, it had angered Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas but the clubs finally reached a settlement. Villas-Boas also wished him well for his new assignment and talked about some wonderful memories from the last season. Spurs have made up for their loss by signing seven international footballers for a total outlay approaching £105m.
