Emma Watson Designs Ethical Fashion Collection

Her wand-wielding days as Hermione Granger may be over, but Emma Watson continues to make news; what is more important, she does it for all the right reasons. The former on-screen witch’s latest headlines have to do with her final ethical fashion collection made in collaboration with a London-based fashion firm, People Tree. The Emma Watson outfits are currently available for sale via People Tree.

The key word here is “ethical fashion”. Not only did Emma collaborate on a community-conscious fashion collection, but she also went right into the slums of Bangladesh to meet the locals that her fashion line is helping. Emma is also writing about her experiences in a new book named “Naked Fashion”.

People Tree CEO Safia Minney said that Emma was very involved in the design process. The designing took place around the same time that Emma was wrapping up shoots for the final Harry Potter movie. Emma would drop by after shoots, and she took sufficient interest to see how People Tree was helping Bangladeshis through fashion. “She [Emma] was keen to build in hand-sewn details where possible,” says Minney.

In general, green products are more expensive than regular ones. And green consumers have cut back on their spending in the months following the recession. However, People Tree CEO Safia Minney says that despite the cutbacks they have found “tremendous loyalty” among customers.

Few high street brands follow environmental laws while creating garments. Moreover, the spike in mass consumption and the demand for fast fashion, adds to the environmental burden. Organizations like People Tree are doing their bit to promote responsibility towards the environment and social justice. Next up from People Tree is a line by fashion designer Orla Kiely.
