Cunard has traditionally held out from the profitable trend of offering weddings at sea, something which isn’t allowed under British law. Weddings at sea is a popular and growing trend. However, Cunard Line had resisted the idea as it prohibited under the British law. But the Cunard Cruises has given in to the temptation and will allow its passengers to marry on board for the first time in its 171-year history. All three of its cruise liners, Queen Elizabeth cruise, Queen Mary cruise and Queen Victoria have been registered in Bermuda and they will not sail under the Union Jack any more.
The cruise wedding program called Weddings at Sea will start from Spring next year. Cunard Line is preparing a brochure for the program and will release it in November and subsequently start bookings for next year. The concept had grown very popular and all the other cruise liners were offering various packages and cornering all the business. Peter Shanks from Cunard Line revealed that they regularly received enquiries by couples intending to marry on their ships. It is a growing and lucrative segment of the cruise business and it makes commercial sense to get into it before it is too late.
The couples getting married on board a ship often request the captain of the ship to preside over the ceremony. But all captains are not legally allowed to preside over a wedding. However, some cruise companies are offering this service also. Weddings have become the most popular milestone to be celebrated on board a ship. Till the space wedding takes over the cruise liners are all set to cash in on the popular and growing trend.
