Entrepreneur Alexander Amosu has built up quite a business with his line of super-expensive phones. It all began when the London-based, Nigerian-origin Amosu designed a super-glam cell phone for a friend to gift his wife on Christmas two years ago. Amosu’s creation had a diamond-encrusted front, and it proved a huge hit with his friend’s wife.
Since then, Amosu’s company has created Apple headphones that are studded with Swarovski crystals, Mont Blanc pens encrusted with diamonds, even bespoke suits. Among the latest releases from Amosu’s workshops is the 18-carat gold “Black Diamond” Black Berry that boasts of some 1,400 diamonds. The mobile device costs a staggering $26,000.
Amosu’s company has played on the buzz generated by its line of “most expensive” mobile devices. A regular iPhone or Blackberry takes on a completely new persona once Amosu is through turning it into a luxury device. One would expect that a luxury line like this would have been severely affected by the recession. However, Amosu claims that the downturn did not affect his business. The only problem was that the moneyed classes hesitated to go out and spend on ultra expensive items given the general economic situation. Nevertheless, the personal nature of Amosu’s creations ensured that sales and demand did not dip.
The entrepreneur is now planning to branch out into bags and shoes for men and women. Of course, these are all customized, high-end luxury products. Amosu’s products are largely sold online. But Amosu creations are available for sale in London’s Selfridges and in stores in Dubai and Monaco. In the meanwhile, Amosu plans on launching standalone stores across the world within the next five years.
