Africa Features Prominently In New Louis Vuitton Collection

Ivy League Prep and African Sahara come together in the Louis Vuitton 2012 Spring/Summer Collection. The new menswear line, which debuted recently at the Paris Men’s Fashion Week is the creation of style director Kim Jones, with artistic direction from Marc Jacobs. The collection is also a throwback to Louis Vuitton’s commitment to luxury travel.

British-born Jones spent his childhood in the African continent. With this new collection, he draws on his childhood experiences to create this line of “relaxed luxury”. The Africa section offers a range of unusual and striking pieces. For instance, there are silk ties with 24-karat gold threading that feature check prints associated with the Masai warrior tribes. The line also includes silk windbreakers with similar graphic Masai check prints.

The collection also includes sweaters and shorts made of cashmere blends, cashmere and cotton scarves, quilted jackets with washed performance leathers and more. The footwear category includes two-tone desert boots, as well as sandals featuring wooden clasps and accents of alligator leather.

Meanwhile, the Ivy League range features several natural fabrics. You will find a classic Harrington jacket, sporty outfits, and even a modern varsity running suit. Also on offer are handkerchiefs with the V logo and club ties.

Jones revealed that the new collection is based around the idea of travel. More specifically, he said that the collection “forms the notion of a coming-of-age through exploration and travel.” He added that New York photographer and artist Peter Beard’s Africa-focused work was also an inspiration for the new Louis Vuitton collection.
