Many luxury hotels are now using art to draw customers with an eye for aesthetics. Earlier this month, we reviewed a book named The Hotel As Art Gallery, which discussed the art scene in New York hotels. Over the next couple of months, Singapore has a unique proposition on offer. As the contemporary arts festival, the Singapore Biennale, kicks off, a temporary hotel has come up around the city’s Merlion statue. For those who do not know, the Merlion is an eight-foot-tall sculpture of a mythical beast. As the name suggests it is a Mer-lion – part mer-creature, part lion. The Merlion is believed to watch over the city and bring prosperity to its people.
The Merlion is already bringing prosperity to its home city. Starting from 9 March, the temporary “Merlion Hotel” was thrown open to guests for overnight stays. The hotel will remain open until 15 May.
This luxury hotel boasts of only a single room. If you can enjoy having the Merlion staring down at you constantly, this should prove a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Spread over 100 square metres, this five-star suite is equipped with a double bed, a white bathroom, and a balcony. In addition, the suite offers views of the Singapore waterfront and the Marina Bay Sands resort. Incidentally, the latter is set to play venue to Singapore’s first Men’s Fashion Week later this month.
Run by The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, the Merlion Hotel offers guests five-star service, personalized room check-in and a butler service. All this for S$150 a night.
