The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. is planning on expanding its presence in Japan. They have reached an agreement with a local builder and promoter and in all probability we will see the opening of their third hotel in Japan in the ancient capital of Kyoto in the spring of 2014. The Japanese economy which was jolted by the massive earth quake and the tsunami is picking up steam again. The Japanese are taking the rebuilding and rehabilitation process as an opportunity to kick start the growth story. Ritz Carlton seems to have joined the process too.
Ritz Carlton has joined hands with Sekisui House Ltd., an Osaka-based home builder who own the now closed Hotel Fujita Kyoto. Located on the Kamo River near the posh Gion district of downtown Kyoto the hotel enjoyed a fairly successful and prestigious run for about 40 years. It was known for playing host to movie stars and several high profile personalities. According to sources in the business circle of the city, Ritz Carlton is expected to start construction as early as next year. There experience at Ritz Carlton Dallas and Ritz Carlton New York will come in handy in creating a unique hotel which is expected to have no more than 140 guest rooms.
The Hotel Fujita Kyoto was closed in January and the new hotel that will come up in its place will feature upscale restaurants and a spa, which will combine the design elements of traditional Japanese and Western luxury hotel styles. With Ritz Carlton operating and managing the new hotel, it will be aimed at the affluent international traveler and the rooms are expected to be priced in the range of ¥ 50,000 which is approximately $600 per night.
