The Buccaneer resort is the oldest and perhaps the most luxurious on the US Virgin Islands. The estate has lorded over St. Croix for over 350 years now. The first building on the oceanfront Estate Shoys was constructed way back in 1653 by Charles Martel, the Knight of Malta. The island changed hands in 1733 when the Danes bought it. Their Governor Von Prock chose the island to build his residence. However, it was in 1947 that the Buccaneer was first opened as a hotel with 11 rooms.
The Unique feature of the resort is that all the original buildings on the property have survived and are part of the resort. It is today one of the longest running resort ion the Caribbean. It has not only survived but flourished because over the decades it has been artfully updated. The resort’s Caribbean flair and casual elegance has attracted many high and mighty including President Jimmy Carter, Arthur Ashe, Lauren Bacall and Michael Jackson. After all it is no ordinary resort as it is spread on 350 acres and boasts of an 18 hole golf course.
The process of updating is still on at the resort and their latest creation which was recently unveiled is the largest and the most luxurious suite ever. Called the Ficus Suite, it overlooks the infinity edged pool on the property and one of the three private beaches. The suite boasts of two master bedrooms with opulent en-suite baths. The suite boasts of two sitting areas, a dining room and kitchenette. There is scope to enlarge the suite further as it can be connected to the adjacent Frigate Suite which adds another bedroom and the Frigate room to the suite. The suite provides the ultimate experience in luxury and privacy. The rate starts at $1,850 per night.
