Reasonableness, economy, budget – these words are missing from the lexicon’s of India’s superrich population. Cutting corners is unknown to organizers of the great big Indian wedding. A case in point was a recent wedding in Rajasthan, involving the scions of two local business houses. The groom, Rishabh, is the son of Cyril Shroff, managing partner at Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co, a major law firm in India. The bride, Saloni, hails from the family of a prominent Jaipur jeweler.
It turns out that the families are big on connections. The guest list for the 4 November wedding read like a who’s-who list of India’s biggest names. The Ambani brothers – Mukesh and Anil – along with mother Kokilaben Ambani made did to the lavish event. So did other icons of Indian business – Kumaramangalam Birla, the Jindals, the Thapars, the Ruias, the Goenkas, the Piramals and Captain Krishna Nair of the Leela Hotels group. Political heavyweights like Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Rajasthan Chief Minister were also expected to grace the event. The guest list included 250 foreign invitees as well.
With a guest list like this, lavish arrangements became necessities. Thus, the families chartered 15 to 20 planes to fly in the guests. A red carpet welcome awaited guests even as they stepped out of the plane. The red carpet apparently led to the wedding venue at Jaigarh Fort. The families also arranged for 600 luxury cars to transport guests to the venue. Taj and Oberoi hotels were commissioned to host the event and arrange for an elaborate 18-course meal.
