Damien Hirst Gives Brit Awards Trophy a Makeover With His Multi-Colored Polka Dots

Brit Awards, the British equivalent of the Grammys is gearing up for its 33rd edition scheduled to be held on February 20, 2013. The popular music awards are given away by the British Phonographic Industry. One unique feature of this award is that every year the trophy gets a makeover by a prominent designer. This year Damien Hirst has been commissioned to design the trophies for the Brit Awards. Hirst is the third British artist to have the honor of dressing up the blank canvas trophy. It was Dame Vivienne Westwood who first got the opportunity in 2011 and added haute couture flair to the statuette.

Sir Peter Blake Had Given The Statuette His Touch Last Year

It became a trend and in 2012 it was the ‘godfather’ of British Pop art Sir Peter Blake who gave the statuette his creative touch. Sir Blake ia best known for creating the sleeve of Beatles’ Grammy award winning album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. As mentioned earlier, Damien Hirst is the third British artist to be given the creative responsibility. Hirst is known as the wealthiest living artist and has created controversies with his unusual works that include blinged human skulls, dead animal artifacts and medicine cabinet sculptures. He has recently collaborated with actresses-turned-CFDA winners The Olsen Twins that resulted in the creation of the world’s most expensive Backpack worth $55,000.

Damien Hirst Honored to be Given the Prestigious Job

Some people found the choice of Hirst for a mainstream event like Brit Awards to be controversial. But Hirst himself was very happy and said, “I am honored to be asked to design this year’s statue, it has become such an iconic award, I love the Brits.” Brit Awards Chairman David Joseph believes that Hirst is one of the most important artists today and his redesigning the trophy will make the awards even more special this year. Hirst has not disappointed and given an artistic makeover to the Brit Award in his own style. The trophy this year sport Hirst’s signature bright, multi-colored polka dots motif.
