Legendary gangster of the 19th century John Herbert Dillinger continues to steal his way to the banks. We don’t mean literally but it is his Remington .41 caliber Doubke Derringer pistol that doing his job now. The small pistol which was found hidden in one is Dillinger’s socks at the time of his arrest in Arizona way back in 1934, was recently up for auction.
Dillinger’s life has intrigued many for his macho style and death at the hand of FBI agents in Chichago in Juky 1934 when he was just 31. Several Hollywood films have been inspired by thie character, even the recent ‘Public Enemies’ where actor Johnny Depp played Dillinger’s role.
Coming back to the pistol, it was given by the then Tucson Sheriff to a probation offier and kept in Dillinger’s family until they decided to sell it in 1959. The owner’s name has been kept anonymous and he sold the pictol because of is failing health. All this is established by an affidavit. The pistol is now owned by a private LA collector who made a winning bid of $95,600.
