It is difficult to imagine that someone could be passionate about mattresses and that he would devote all his energy, creativity and entrepreneurship in making beautiful luxurious mattress. Â Earl Kluft is one such example. He was practically born into the mattress making business. It was his grandfather who founded the Deluxe Bedding Company in 1946 in Los Angeles. He started working in the workshops of the company and grew up in the business.
Kluft was the first to design a $2,000 bed in 1986 for Bullock’s. He has been focused on creating luxury mattresses. Under the brand name Chattam & Wells he started creating Kluft mattresses which had gold detailing and other innovative features like corner vents and Belgian damask. In order to scale up the business to national level he sold the business. The arrangement did not work out well as he lost control and the new owners scaled down his mattresses from a luxury mattress to a mass product.
Kluft restarted from scratch by acquiring Aireloom and renamed it E.S. Kluft & Company. He was determined on making the best mattresses in the world. He not only prefers traditional methods of production but he distributes and retails his products in the traditional way as well. His products are available from 350 actual locations and stores. Since Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s stock his products they retail it through their website as well. For Kluft making a mattress is an art and not a science or engineering. He has definitely mastered that art as his company is flourishing with a projected turnover of $50 million this year.
