They say that reaching the top is the easier part, staying at the top is the tough part that requires some doing. And that is where the Mardan Palace Hotel in Turkey seems to have failed. Just some time back it beat properties like Burj Al Arab, Dubai, The Dorchester in London and The Trump Hotel, Chicago to be crowned the “World’s Leading Luxury Hotel†at the World Travel awards, 2010.
And before the year 2010 is out the news comes that the power supply of the hotel has been cut off as their dues in electricity bills have touched $3 million. Last year in May the Hotel had one of the grandest openings with Mariah Carey and Tom Jones performing for a payment of $1.5 million. Other celebrity guests like Seal, Richard Gere, Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton had graced the occasion.
The Mardan Palace was built by Azeri-born businessman Telman Ismailov at a cost of more than $1.4 billion. The hotel with the Mediterranean’s largest swimming pool, 10 restaurants, 11 bars and 546 rooms, including two royal suites with private pools consumes electricity worth $300,000 every month. The hotel has been given three weeks time to clear the dues and get the electric supply restored. The hotel is being powered by generators at the moment.
