Downtown Midland could soon turn into a luxury destination if real estate biggies in the area have their way. David H. Helgerson, owner of Better Grounds, LLC, revealed that construction on a $3 million redevelopment project could begin this March at 114 E. Main Street. The construction would be for a luxury building which would house two retail outlets on the main floor, six condos spread across the second, third and fourth floors, plus a rooftop deck for the public. Helgerson revealed that they are hoping that this project will convince other builders to head to the downtown Midland area.
The building that now stands at 114 E. Main Street is only a shell with dirt floors and no roof. Helgerson’s company is hoping to wrangle a tax incentive from the Midland City Council to make this Midland project more viable. Talks are currently in the final stages.
The building at the site was originally built in 1914. Helgerson plans to add three extra floors to the original building, making it a structure that covers an area of 24,000 square feet. The building will feature 2-bedroom and 1-bedroom condominiums with space of about 2,200 square feet and 1,450 square feet respectively. The rooftop deck will measure in at 3,500 feet. Apart from being open to the public, Helgerson plans that it will be used for events as well.
With Three Rivers Construction as the general contractor, Helgerson has promised that this will be Midland’s tallest building. He hopes that it will serve in attracting people to downtown Midland.
