Hoh hoh hooo..! No, that is not the Santa coming. That is me exclaiming when I saw the price of a Santa toy that fetched a mind boggling $161,000! Yes, it was no ordinary toy. It was a vintage one and is called the Althof Bergmann Santa Sleigh toy. It was sold at this astounding price at the James D Julia’ Toy, Doll and Advertising auction that saw items fetching a total of $2.1 million.
Who would have thought that toys would fetch so much money! This sleigh pulled by goats is apparently “the rarest and most important of all early-American tin toys”, and has now earned its name in the record books for being the most expensive toy to be auctioned off in the last two to three years. It is also the most priciest American tin toy sold off in the last 15 years. Apart from this toy, there were also other toys in Malcolm Deisenroth’s collection that fetched a total of $1.04 million!
Other interesting items in this sale included mechanical banks, coin-op, fine dolls, salesman samples and antique advertising that saw an all-original Caille upright double slot machine being sold off for a cool $80,500. I told my mother not to give away my toys! Probably could have made a few million bucks.
