The world’s largest gold coin up for auction

Got change? Well here is one, and it is worth $ 1,000.000! Yes, this is the world largest coin that is made of gold! The 2007 Canadian $ 1,000.000 Maple Leaf was auctioned off in Vienna. The prices were high, considering the uniqueness and not to forget the rapidly growing value of gold. The auction will be carried out by Dorotheum, and will be held on June25th. At 220 pounds, this coin is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The precious coin has a picture of Queen Elizabeth II and has Canada’s symbol of the maple leaf. Made from the purest 999.99/1000 gold, this coins face value is much lower than the current value. It’s rate will be based on the gold rate of gold in the market. In September 2009, this coin had the opportunity to travel to Prague and was displayed there. Currently it was at the ‘Münzkabinett’ of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, which happens to house the world’s largest coin collection.

I don’t see the point of such a manner of the use of gold. I mean one could use all that gold for beautiful jewelleries. But then it would sure look great gracing the room of some obnoxiously rich guy, or maybe a museum.
