Serious watch collectors can never have enough of high-end chronographs. One of the best-looking chronographs that I encountered recently was Eberhard & Co.’s Chrono 4 Geant Titanium Limited Edition. But if you are more inclined towards a watch that spells timeless elegance, TAG Heuer is coming up with a limited edition reissue of an iconic Grand Prix inspired watch, the Monza chronograph. The re-issue will mark a very special occasion. It so happens that 2011 marks “150 years of Motor Racing” for the Swiss watchmaker.
The Monza was first introduced in the 1930s. The design was inspired by Italian racing track, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The luxury watch’s round dial and cushion-cut casing are its distinctive features. Plus, there is a beautiful play of colors – bright blue hands and Arabic numerals that glow add color to the stark white background of the dial. The 1938 Monza also features the original logo of TAG Heuer.
The Monza re-issue will be staying true to its retro look. However, this will be boosted with a high-frequency Celibre 36 movement. Thus, this chronograph is accurate up to 1/10th of a second. If you want to see observe the mechanics of this beautiful luxury watch, flip it over. The caseback of the Monza is crafted out of sapphire crystal. It is transparent, so you can always check up on how your elegant timepiece is running.
Only 1,911 pieces of the new Monza will be available at a price of $7,900. Why 1,911? Because 1911 was the year when Heuer patented the world’s first dashboard chronograph. This timepiece is not just another watch. It is a piece of history.
