One of the most renowned and legendary Hollywood actors, Steve McQueen, a.k.a ‘The King of Cool’ is now once again in the spotlight, as the actor’s racing suit, that he wore in the iconic Hollywood blockbuster, Le Mans (1971), has now been set up for sale by Toronto’s Collector’s Studio. This magnificent racing suit, that propelled Steve to a cult status figure, is a flame resistant suit, made from Nomex and was designed by Hinchman of Indianapolis. The suit itself is said to be in excellent condition and carries the name of McQueen’s character name, ‘Michael Delaney’ from the movie itself. Along with the character name, Nomex suit from Le Mans also bears the name of various sponsors of the event including, Gulf, Heuer, Firestone, as well as the flag of the U.S.
This Nomex suit was donated by Solar Productions / MGM to a British newspaper in the year 1971, when the daily was conducting a Le Mans related contest. The winner of this particular contest was presented with this legendary racing suit by the British racing legend, Richard Attwood, who is revered across the racing circuit for his magnificent win at the 1970 Le Mans race, driving a Porsche 917K with Gulf livery. Steve McQueen related memorabilia have always been one of the most sought after, as is evident by the sale of Rolex Submariner by Antiquorum for $234,000 and the sale of the actor’s pairs of classic Persol sunglasses for an astounding $69,000.  As far as the Le Mans racing suit is concerned, there has been no fixed amount announced as yet, however as per sources, there have been numerous offers leading up to a whopping $140,000
