Rhode Island’s one and half century old Ocean House resort restored to its original grandeur

Watch Hill, Rhode Island’s historic Ocean House resort has opened its gates gain after the completion of a whopping $140million renovation. The place, which had originally opened way back in 1868, had heralded an era of high society. This Victorian-style property became the hub of the crème de la crème of society thanks to its great architecture and a flurry of activities offered here.

Due to its prime beachfront location, the guests could go have a swim in the sea, play croquet on the lawn, go for sailing, or simply enjoy a cup of tea late in the afternoon. The dining room here could serve 500 people! Not surprisingly, people would specially come over here to entertain large parties of guests. But a century and a half of wear and tear combined with a series of unfortunate fires had taken away its old grandeur.

But in 2004, a group of summer residents, led by Charles M Royce, President of Royce Funds decided to salvage the old structure. But when it was realized that a simple renovation wasn’t sufficient, they decided to recreate the original Ocean House. The result I must say is great. The picture says it all.
