Airline food is not known for its quality. But Cathay Pacific looks ready to change perceptions. Celebrity chefs often collaborate on in-flight menus for airlines, but never like this. Cathay Pacific has tied up with Swire Hotels, and will be providing specialties from the group’s restaurants on board flights.
This is a brave move for Cathay Pacific, for recreating quality food from the menu of a Hong Kong top restaurant will be a big job within the confines of an aircraft galley. The Swire Hotels menu will be on offer onboard Cathay Pacific flights leaving from Hong Kong for a limited period between 1 November 2011 and 31 January 2012.
Of course, this classy in-flight menu will not be extended to economy class passengers. This one is just for guests traveling business class. And anyone who has eaten at the restaurants of luxury chain Swire Hotels will recognize that passengers are in for a treat. The participating restaurants include Sureno and Bei at the Opposite House hotel in Beijing, Food by EAST at the East Hotel Hong Kong, and Café Gray Deluxe by Gray Kunz, a Michelin-starred eatery.
Yes, the restaurants are among the best in Hong Kong. Some of the dishes, like braised short rib of beef, soft polenta, meaux mustard by Café Gray Deluxe and black miso pork belly with black sugar, baby taro and brassica by Bei, are mouthwatering creations. This is certainly a departure from the usual collaborations with celebrity chefs. If it works, it would be great news for travelers.
Do you think flights can successfully serve up gourmet delicacies 35,000 feet up in the air?
