The best way to allocate something that is scarce is through auctions and fine wines that come on the market in very limited quantities are making their presence felt in auctions. Bonhams which is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques and offers more sales than any of its rivals is holding a Fine & Rare wines sale on 13th September at New Bond Street, London. The auction house has curated an exceptional selection of rare Cognac for the sale. However the focus is expected to be on a bottle of Rémy Martin Black Pearl Cognac. The limited edition Cognac is bottled in a special black crystal decanter and is estimated to fetch between £5,000 and 7,000.
Only 800 Bottles of Black Pearl Released Every Year
The ‘Louis XIII de Remy Martin’ Cognac is a bit unusual as it has been made using a special blend of 1200 eaux de vie which could be anywhere between 40 and 100 years old. And they have all been aged in very old oak barrels. The grapes from which the Cognac is made came from the innermost heart of the Cognac region, the Grande Champagne territory. Baccarat crystal decanters are specially designed for bottling all Louis XIII Cognac. The supply of Black Pearl is controlled and only 800 bottles are released for sale every year and very few of them find their way into the open market. The Black Pearl bottle is made from black crystal with a silvery gleam. The stopper is also special and has a fleur-de-lys design.
A South African Bar Manager had First Bought it
This bottle has come to the auction after several years of traveling on a luxury cruise liner. It was first stocked by an on-board shopping mall and first purchased by an experienced South African bar manager. He was experienced enough to realize its importance and bought it while the ship was in Greece but sent the bottle to South Africa for safekeeping. The auction will also see some other exceptional Cognac including two bottles that are over 200 years old. Réserve Marie Domain, a bottle of Pierre Ferrand Cognac is dated 1806 and has been estimated at 1,800-2,200. The bottle comes in a wooden box with a humidifier and hygrometer. The other bottle is a Napoléon Grande Fine Champagne Cognac and is estimated at £1,000-1,500.
