The Belfast’s Merchant Hotel in Melbourne is now offering the world’s most expensive cocktail, a Mai Tai, with a price tag of $1,300. The Mai Tai has a long standing history, dating back to the year 1944, when it was served at the, Trader Vic’s, a South Seas-style bar-and-restaurant in Oakland, US.
The Mai Tai cocktail was the invention of the founder of Trader Vic’s, Victor Jules Bergeron Jr, and the restaurant’s bartender. This incredible cocktails is made of 2 ounces of a 17-year-old J. Wray & Nephew Jamaican rum, 1/2 ounce French Garnier Orgeat, 1/2 ounce Holland DeKuyper Orange Curacao, 1/4 ounce rock candy syrup and freshly squeezed lime juice. After creating the very first Mai Tai, yet unnamed cocktail, Mr. Bergeron first offered it to two of his friends, Eastham and Carrie Guild. Both individuals were from Tahiti and after tasting the cocktail, they referred the taste as “Mai Taiâ€, which means “out of this world†and thus came the name of the cocktail.
Keeping the Mai Tai tradition alive, the Belfast’s Merchant Hotel also uses the 17 year old rum, even though, it is very hard to acquire, as after the popularity of the Mai Tai increased at a rapid rate, the main ingredient, rum, became available in shortages, as it is an ultra-rare 17-year-old J Wray & Nephew Jamaican Ruma.
According to Mr. Burgeron,
“I asked what in the hell that meant and Ham said, ‘In Tahitian it means ‘out of this world,’ ‘the best.’ ” “That’s the name of this drink, then. It’s Mai Tai. It’s out of this world.”
