China’s luxury market is growing at a fast pace but the irony is that it almost entirely cornered by the western brands. In the western markets made in China could mean a knock off but a new trend is emerging in China now of “proudly crafted in Chinaâ€. The Chinese Timekeeper or CTK is a very good example of this trend. It is a new luxury watch brand that wants to be recognized as being distinctively Chinese.
Bain & Co. has studied the Chinese watch market closely and says in its report that the market is growing at 35% annually. Cartier, Longines, Omega, Rolex and Tudor are the five brands that dominate the Chinese watch market at the moment. Instead of imitating the well entrenched brands CTK is embracing China’s history to create the first exclusive Chinese watch collection, which consists of six models simply known as CTK01-06.
The inspiration for the design of CTK’s new collection is drawn from Su Song’s clock tower. Each step of the design is a recreation of the clock tower. Four large screws on the bezel hold four layers of stainless steel rings that make up the case. The collection is a limited edition release and the exclusive timepieces have been priced in the range of $2,300 to $2,700.
