A condo at Ritz-Carlton Residences at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor area should be a dream come true for most people. But one resident in this luxury property apparently wants more. Rumour has it that an architect has approached city officials about permits needed to build a gun-range in a Ritz Carlton penthouse-level condo on Key Highway. This being a rather unusual request, word is already out and speculation is rife as to who the gun-toting resident might be. If the gossipmongers are to be believed, the condo owner in question is none other than thriller writer Tom Clancy.
Of course, that is sheer speculation at this point. But the clues are pointing Clancy’s way. The author is a gun enthusiast, and a New York Times article from 1999 had apparently mentioned that he had an in-house gun range in his Chesapeake Bay home. Clancy certainly has enough space for a gun-range. He lives in some 17,000 square feet of condo space after having bought six penthouses for $16.6 million.
However, architect John Chalk of Ellicott City, who has been hired to design the gun range claimed ignorance about the owner’s identity. Chalk was not approached directly by the owner, but hired by a New York-based interior design company. Apparently, the condo owner is referred to only as “the client” in the paperwork.
Chalk revealed that he has been hired to build only a single lane, and not an entire rifle range. However, that too could be a tall task. Whether the laws, rules and permits would allow a gun range and whether the condo association would allow it are the more immediate questions.
