Most Expensive Condo in Manhattan Bought by Rockets Owner for $42 Million

Leslie Alexander, the owner of the Houston Rockets basketball team has bought a duplex penthouse in New York City’s Gramercy Park for $42 million which makes it the highest sale price in downtown Manhattan according to a report carried by the Wall Street Journal. However it is nowhere near the price of the most expensive apartment in New York. Alexander who started as a trader for a Wall Street firm was valued at around $1.2 billion and included in the list of 400 richest people in the US in 2006. The condo he has purchased in New York has a total of 6,330 square feet of interior space. It features five bedrooms, five and half baths, a library and gallery. One of the Terraces has an Outdoor Infinity Pool With a Sun Deck

There are four terraces, as well, in the condo spread over 1,889 square feet. One of the terraces faces Gramercy Park and provides views of the Chrysler building. Two of the terraces are attached to the master bedroom. One of them has an outdoor infinity pool with a sun deck and the other one has a heated whirlpool. The building was originally the Salvation Army residence for women and has been re=developed by Zeckendorf Development and Eyal Ofer Global Holdings. The developers are known for their work in high end buildings including Robert Stern’s 15 Central Park West which holds the record for the most expensive closed condo sale in Manhattan.

The condo is located on the 17th and 18th floor of the Gramercy Park and has gone through a makeover under the supervision of Robert A M Stern. The deal for the most expensive condo in Manhattan has closed and Alexander has made a down payment of about $8.4 million only. He will be paying the balance and the mortgage through a monthly installment of $194,681. Alexander was named the best owner in the NBA by Forbes in 2008. He bought the Rockets in July 1993 and in the very first season under his ownership the team won its first ever NBA title. They won the title again in 1995. He owned the Houston Comets from 1997 to 2007 and the team won 4 WNBA championships during his ownership. The team couldn’t sustain beyond a year after he sold it to Hilton Koch.
