Come October and Matthew Williamson, the 38-year-old Mancunian designer has lots of bright and colorful clothing lines much contrary to his earlier designs. The designer recently confessed stating that he had feared about his tastes not always being commercially viable. However, his perception changed once he got recognition with the three year stint in 2005 as creative director of Pucci, the 2009 sell-out H&M collection and this year’s foray into menswear.Williamson also stated that he does not want to create any clothes that have absolutely no selling values.
If you ask Williamson, “What gives him the real buzz?” He would probably quip that people should look at his dresses or suits and think to themselves that they have to have that. Apparently, the designer is seemed to be surprised by the British tastes as his best selling garment this season has been a black dress, which is completely plain, knee-length, with long sleeves. Williamson quickly rationalizes at this trend. He is of the opinion that the current economic situation is the reason behind as people choose to play safe, and not really go on the splurging spree.
Williamson’s Spring/Summer collection, which he has designed in collaboration with Belvedere Vodka will be about going back to his roots, which will have full of playful prints. Interestingly, Williamson admitted that he has always loved women as they are his best muses. He finds women very wonderful to dress. Now talk about women, and I must include that Williamson’s talent was first spotted by Jade Jagger right after he graduated from Central Saint Martins in the year 1994. After this, beautiful women like Kate Moss, Rachel Weisz, Kirsten Dunst, Cheryl Cole and Sienna Miller donned his clothes. Out of all these beautiful women, Williamson chooses Miller as his best muse and mate. He is totally in awe of her beauty. Surprisingly, Williamson says that he is not at all interested in maintaining that only celebrities should wear his clothes. This is quite humble on his part despite having won the recognition.
On the lighter mode, when asked if the leaders’ wives should make more of an effort when it comes to fashion, Williamson chuckles and says that they should dress according to their personal style and be sure that they are comfortable in their own skin regardless of what they wear. He also finds Sarah Brown very stylish. Moving on to his personal life, the designer doesn’t seem to have any terrific plans as such with regard to the epic 4oth birthday he wants to throw himself in Morocco. For now, he will continue to show at London Fashion Week. He admits that he wants follow in Tom Ford’s footsteps by producing a film someday. Well, we wish all the best to the talented designer!
Lastly, did I tell you Williamson has designed a limited edition silk kaftan for Belvedere Vodka. The same is been modeled by model and DJ Leigh Lezark in the image on top and is priced at £995 to be sold exclusively at his boutiques.
