Malcolm Forbes Toy Collection Fetches an Impressive $2.3million

It is funny how toys that we consider to be just childsplay, fetches millions in auctions sometimes. Now I am not talking about just any toy. If it belongs to late millionaire Malcolm Forbes and his sons, then like his assets, everything including his play things become worth millions. It seems that the man and his sons had a passion for collecting antique toys, and this collection fetched an impressive $2.3million (£1.4million) at Sotheby’s auction house in New York on Friday.

Simply titled, The Malcolm Forbes Toy Collection consisted of antique toy boats, luxury ships, soldiers, motorcycles and board games. The highest bid went for a three feet long replica of the 1915 ocean liner Lusitania, which fetched $194,500. This price put it on the top slot for any toy boat till date. Malcolm Forbes had bought this boat at Sotheby’s in 1983 for $28,600. Other highlights were: an Exotic Clockwork Gunboat Attributed to Märklin /Rock and Graner, which went under the hammer for $134,500.

An original Monopoly game set of circular design, which was handmade by Charles Darrow, got $146,500; and two rare sets of intricately carved medieval knights made way back in the 30s that was sold for $15,000. There are several pieces that were made before WWI as well.
