Wine matures with age and its value keeps going up. The rare wines fetch astronomical prices in auctions and compete to become the most expensive wine. There are collectors who stock hundreds of bottles in their walk in wine cellar. The Island Shangri-La Hotel in Hong Kong was the venue of another exciting wine auction by Bonhams. They had created a collection under Fine and Rare Wines & Rarest Single Malt Whisky for the auction which saw an enthusiastic participation from collectors and connoisseurs.
The highlight of the auction was Macallan Master Lalique Collection which is the only set produced and available in the world. The exclusive set consists of three Lalique Crystal decanters with wine that have been aged for 50, 55 and 57 years respectively. The set is presented in a custom-made Macallan sherry wood chest. All the three malts Distilled and bottled by The Macallan Distillers Ltd., Craigellachi. The original pre sales estimate for the lot was between HK$460,000 and HK$590,000 but after some aggressive bidding the lot fetched HK$595,000 ($76,300) inclusive of Buyer’s Premium.
The three wines represent the best of Macallan. The first is part of a limited edition of 470 decanters bottled and is filled with rare 50 year old Macallan that celebrates its exceptional Oak Casks. The second decanter containing 55 year old Macallan is accompanied by stopper , engraved labeling. It is part of a limited edition of 420 decanters and celebrates the Natural Color of Macallan. The third decanter that looks similar has the oldest wine that is 57 years old. It celebrates Macallan’s Finest Cut and is part of a limited edition of 400 decanters.
