Penthouse in 15 Central Park West is on the Market for $88 Million

New York City has very few upscale addresses like 15, Central Park West and if you want to make it own you should be prepared to pay record breaking prices. Sanford Weill, who was earlier the head of Citigroup has properties in the building and he has not just invested in them but has upgraded them further. He had bought a penthouse in the building in 2007 for $43.7 million. For the luxury penthouse the high price had been arrived at based on a price of $6,400 per square foot which was a record at the time.

The building has been designed by Robert A.M. Stern who has taken full advantage of its stunning location and views. There is some talk in the luxury real estate circle that Weill is putting up the penthouse for sale. The property hasn’t been listed officially anywhere but the Journal carried the floor plan of the penthouse and that’s what triggered the buzz. The floor plan is so impressive that it can floor anyone. Weill had got Stern to redesign the bedroom as an oval to ensure an unobstructed view of the sun rising over Central Park.

The penthouse boasts of 19 glass doors that open onto the terrace. The obvious question one asks is that why would Weill want to sell a property like that? He told the Journal that it is difficult time in American history and he would like to be quite. He is not selling the property driven by a need for money. He has more than he needs and in fact he plans to give away the money he receives from the sale to charity. His favorite charities are Carnegie Hall, the Weill Cornell Medical College and the National Academy Foundation and they are most likely to benefit. The Weills have another apartment in the building on the sixth floor and they will be moving downstairs.
