A new production based on an old design. Sounds exciting. But that is exactly what Hoek Design of Netherland has decided to do and the result is interesting to say the least. They took up the design of a 1936 yacht that was never produced and executed the design in aluminium along with some modernisation.
The classic yacht enthusiast knows that J-class is legendary. The J-class denotes the large sailing yachts designed between 1930-1937 for the wealthy yachtsmen who raced them in the America’s cup. The famous yacht designer Nathanael Herreshoff had created the Universal Rule for determining the class and the eligibility of the boat for the Cup. The largest of the J-Class boats , a 44 metre named “77F†was designed by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens in 1936 for the Ranger Syndicate but could not be built actually. Hoek Design have built it at Classen Jachbouw in Zaandam and dubbed the sleek super sailor Lionheart.
The new yacht is available for sale via Yachting Partners International for 14.9 million Euros. The yacht which was designed for both racing as well as cruising has two deckhouses and cockpits. Enthused by the result and the response Hoek Design has already taken up the production of two modern J-Class boats based on a 1935 and a 1937 design by the same designer team.
