Christie’s will be holding a special sale from March 29 to 31 at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The Gourdon Collection will be on sale and it is definitely going to be one of the most important decorative art sales in recent times. The nearest parallel can be drawn to the much publicised Yves Saint Laurent sale in 2009. The Gourdon Collection is the result of diligent and dedicated acquisitions made over 20 years by collector Laurent Negro.
The collection illustrates the rise of Art Deco and Modernism in France. The collection on offer for sale will consist of 1,129 lots of furniture, books, arms and armour, photographs, sculptures and much more.  The presales estimates for the entire collection add up to $55 to $85 million. The highlights of the collection include Eileen Gray’s 1925 Transat, a black lacquer armchair with coated canvas seat.
François des Ricqlès, president of Christie’s France, is of the opinion that the unique sale is a great opportunity for a collector with an eye for interesting work. There are exceptional pieces by internationally renowned artist up for sale. There are interesting and unusual items like the games table by Jean Dunan. Made originally for the library of couturier Madeleine Vionnet in 1930, the table made in black lacquer features a chessboard top and chairs that slide inside to create a compact cube.
