The news channels were flooded with the news of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But another kind of flood, the real kind, wreaked havoc in the American state of Tennessee in the month of May. The damages were extensive. Take for example the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, which had to face the wrath of the natural disaster. If the figures calculated by the operators Gaylord Entertainment are to be believed, the cost of fixing the damage will go upto a whopping $225 million! That is almost like constructing a brand new hotel!
Colin Reed, the Chairman and chief executive officer of the company said that many of their properties in the area including the resort, the Grand Ole Opry etc were extensively damaged by the floods on May 2nd and May 3rd. Gaylord Opryland’s Cascades Lobby, Cascades Restaurant, Cascades Terrace Lobby Bar, the sushi bar will have to undergo complete renovation. Other areas that will require complete renovation are the 117 rooms that were flooded, the Garden Atrium, the Jack Daniel Restaurant, and Volare’s Restaurant.
Other areas such as the exhibition space will also require extensive cleaning. The owners are planning to redecorate some parts of the hotel as well. All this will take five months, as a result of which about 1,700 employees will be released from their contracts. The resort is expected to reopen after November.
