Starting 18 March 2011, the Contemporary Art Centre of Malaga is the venue for an exhibition by Swiss artist Sylvie Fleury. Organized with the help of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, the pop art exhibition is set to carry on until 12 June 2011. This marks the first Fleury exhibit to be held in Spain. Fleury is an acclaimed contemporary artist. Her works are showcased in many galleries and museums across the world in places including New York, Tokyo and London. In many ways, Andy Warhol inspires Fleury’s work, but with a distinction. Warhol’s work often satirized mass media and consumption. Fleury is more concerned with a contemporary angst fuelled by frivolity in the world of fashion and luxury. Her artworks do not immediately come across as being critical of the glamour world. However, they are very focused on revealing the inevitable disillusionment that is connected with this world of big money and luxury living.
The Director of the CAC Malaga, Fernando Frances described Fleury’s work as “a reflection of Pop Culture” that focuses on compulsive consumption in modern society. However, pop art is not the only influence on Fleury’s works. The Swiss artist also takes inspiration from installation and post-conceptual artists like Jeff Koons, Piet Mondrian and Marcel Duchamp.
The exhibition presents a view of Fleury’s work over the last two decades, from the early 1990s onwards. 100 of the artist’s artworks have been chosen for this exhibit. These include works in various media, from sculpture and paintings to murals, neons and videos.
