Around the World in 80 Days? Alan Priddy plans to do it in 50!

Around the world in 80 days will not be such an amazing feat if British ocean adventurer Alan Priddy’s plans work out. He plans to go around the world in his powerboat in less than 50 days! He is currently building a super boat that will enable him to accomplish this amazing feat. If you are thinking whether somebody has already done this, then the answer is yes, and the man is New Zealander Pete Bethune, who took 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes for circumnavigating the globe.

Completing the 24,000 mile circuit is not only a test of endurance but also of your boat. And if the target is to cover the distance in such a short time period, then the quality and speed of the boat becomes even more crucial. Hence, Priddy is trying to make a highly-streamlined 24-metre superyacht prototype capable of ultra-efficient wave-piercing.

Priddy says: “Many people have raced around the world, but you can count on the fingers of one hand the numbers that have successfully attempted to motor round in record time.” Yes, well we are not surprised at that. I must say that his boat looks great too apart from the technical modifications. His record will be overseen by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the Monaco-based international governing body of powerboating, founded in 1922, and only after their nod will the record be official, if and when he finishes it in the stipulated time period.
