Sotheby’s in New York auctioned off many important works of Andy Warhol. The painting of a coca-cola bottle on the canvas in black and white came under the hammer and sold at unbelievable rate. Andy Warhol’s “Coca-Cola (4) (Large Coca-Cola)” fetched $33.4m where in only $25 million was expected.
The auctioneer of worldwide head of contemporary art at Sotheby’s Meyer was of the opinion that the sale was a great success on Tuesday evening. He also said that the bidding entrants were smart, long time collectors and new comers from all over the globe. The Warhol painting buyer’s name was not revealed. The work was sold by the collector; Elizabeth Rea who had purchased the painting in 1983 for $143,000.
The same evening two other works of Warhol named “The Last Supper†and 1978’s “Shadows†were sold for $6.8m and 4.2m respectively. Andy Warhol has left an indelible mark on contemporary art, and his take on Pop Art has remained significant till today. He was one of the most controversial figures in the history of art, mostly because of the homoeroticism that he portrayed in his art.
