If you are a multi-millionaire and sitting at an auction, then how much would you be willing to pay for a photograph? The answer has recently been revealed when one of the biggest auction houses, Christie’s New York, became the venue for the sale of 1981 Portrait ‘Untitled #96’ from artist Cindy Sherman that fetched a staggering $3.89 million from a New York dealer, Philippe Segalot.  This ultra-expensive auction of Cindy Sherman’s portrait has made the transaction the highest ever to have been paid for a photograph. The sale happened at a contemporary art auction at Christies and it turned out to be a magnificent night for the auction house, as the total sales went in excess of $300 million with works from some of the most well renowned artists such as Francis Bacon, Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg went under the hammer.
Though ‘Untitled #96’ was just a part of the auction, yet its sale tagged this self-portrait from Cindy Sherman as the most expensive photograph ever to have been auctioned. The portrait shows the artist reclining wearing cashmere outfit and engrossed in her thoughts. This amazing piece of artistry was acquired by the collectors from an edition of ten Cindy Sherman photographs that were released in the year 1981. Another version of the portrait was sold during an auction at Phillips de Pury in the month of November last year, fetching $2,770,500, which at that time made it the most expensive photograph ever auctioned.
