Can you remember a song about cars from Elvis Presley. Maybe not, because he did not write any around cars. But it is a fact that the King loved his cars. He liked buying them, driving them and even giving them away. Now one of his more impressive cars, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600, is being auctioned off in Surrey, England, at a Bonhams year-end event colorfully known as the Important Motor Cars and Fine Automobilia sale.
Bonhams, the auction house while describing the specialties of the Benz, which is slate blue in color, said that the car is special in more ways than one because it is one of the very few cars that were actually registered in Presley’s name. They even displayed the photograph of the registration to prove it. Detailing its history the spokes person said that Elvis used it for two years before giving it away to a friend, James Leroy Robertson. The car ultimately ended up with Robertson Motors Memphis who sold it in 2005.
Bonhams have handled a lot of celebrity high profile cars in the past. At an auction in July it offered a DeLorean DMC12 Coupe owned by Miranda Guinness, the countess of Iveagh, and a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 owned by the Australian singers Kylie and Dannii Minogue. The pre sale estimate of the Presley Benz is £150,000 to £200,000, or roughly $231,000 to $309,000.
