A rare 17th Century Persian carpet could just be the world’s most expensive carpet. It fetched a world record £6.2 million, which is more than 20 times what was exp0ected at Christie’s London yesterday.
The buyer was an anonymous overseas bidder and it beat the previous £2.3m for a silk Isfahan rug, which is also a Persian rug. The 17th Century Persian carpet was made in the Iranian city of Kirman, who are known to be the “arguably the most inventive and influential of all carpet designers. It would be really a great thing if the old rug that is lying in your house is worth millions.
The next time you purchase an old rug or carpet online, immediately get it assessed by Christie’s or Sotheby’s for that would tell you if you are unknowingly keeping a gem amidst you. If you make money like that because of a carpet, you could relax all your life without doing anything. All you would need to do is go ahead and check if you really think you have a carpet that is at least a century old. Persian rugs and carpets are famous the world over.
