Mint Julep Completes 75 Years as the Official Drink of the Kentucky Derby

The renowned Kentucky Derby is being held this year again on the 5th of May at the Churchill Downs race track in Louisville, KY. The official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby for the last 75 years is offering the world’s most exclusive Mint Julep Cup. Called the Woodford Reserve Mint Julep Cup and priced at $1,000, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby is featuring double of all the most exotic ingredients. The 2012 cup is the most exclusive so far as it commemorates the 75th year of mint julep as the official drink of the renowned race. Only 75 cups will be made and made available for sale.

The first batch was released for sale on the 16th of April. The limited edition cups have been individually numbered. The exclusive cups have been packaged in Woodford Reserve’s signature casing made from the same wood as barrels of Woodford Reserve. 65 cups from the lot are even more exclusive as they have been finished as traditional polished cups. A stunning horse scene and the logo of Woodford Reserve along with the date of the 2012 Kentucky Derby has been hand engraved on these cups. An exclusive sterling silver sipping straw is also being provided with each cup. The engraving process takes two and half hour and seven different graver tools are used.

The other ten cups will be called Prestige cups and will be plated in 24 carat gold. The cups that are made from sterling silver will have diamond horseshoe encrusted on the body. A total of 43 diamonds of one carat each has been hand set by an expert jeweler to create the horse shoe. The price of these Prestige cups will double of the Traditional cups at $2,000. Another new feature of the 2012 $1,000 Mint Julep Cup is that it will have double the ingredients like Bourbon Vanilla Sugar and Bourbon Vanilla Sugar. The buyers of the cup will get the taste of double the mint along with double the ice. The Heart of a Horse Foundation will be the beneficiary of the proceeds of the sales of the Woodford Reserve $1,000 Mint Julep Cups.
