Brown bags were never meant to be stylish or glamorous. They were supposed to be an eco-friendly replacement for the polythene bags the retailers used earlier. But all that has changed as a top designer has stepped in to make the brown paper lunch bags into a fashion statement. The fashionistas have given it a thumbs up and as a result the designer brown bags are retailing for $290. The response has been so good that the Jil Sander store in SoHo has already sold out its stock of what is being called the Vasari sack. The gussied up brown paper bag is not available online either. Perhaps the designer and the manufacturers had also not expected such an enthusiastic response.

The brown paper lunch bag has been reproduced in leather also but instead of retaining the brown color it has been reproduced in black leather. The leather version has been priced at $630. W Magazine has endorsed the bag as they find it to be perfectly in sync with the fashion house’s minimalist roots. But there are others who disagree. Some have even equated it to grand theft. A commentator on the fashion website The Fancy wrote that he would rather give $300 to a bum on the corner. Another commentator on the digital design magazine Hype Beast said that he could get 50 such brown bags for $3.
Brown Bag Vasari Clutch by Jil Sander is a Fashion Statement
Ecouterre, the blog took it a step further by running an online poll where 42 people voted the bag as ‘not haute’ and only three participants admired it. The Vasari sack is made out of coated paper and has stitched seams and metal vents. The bag carries the Jil Sander logo and is part of the men’s collection for fall. Mildred Fabian, regional director of the design house explained that it is part of the last collection from Raf Simons, who had been creative director since 2005 which makes the bag a collector’s item. She felt the price was justified as no one objected to it. She considers it to be a fashion statement. The cost of the bag can be recovered within a year if you save a dollar a day by carrying lunch from home instead of going for take-outs.
