Is the power of fashion diminishing over the years? If you are the Time magazine then the answer is yes. The Time 100 power list had two representative from the fashion industry last year but the representation has been brought down to just one this year. We are afraid that if this trend continues the Time magazine would have us believe that no person in the fashion industry is influential or powerful enough to be counted in the top 100. Tom Ford is the lone representative of the entire fashion community in the Time 100.
Tom of course is a deserving candidate as his work in the last decade or so has redefined what the word sexy means to us. He has worked for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent and they have both gained immensely through his work both in terms of prestige in the industry and hard core sales and profits. His presentation of the show last September has changed the way shows are presented. His debut collection for his eponymous label is hyper exclusive in nature and a collection of some of the most beautiful clothes ever.
His movie A Single Man has been highly appreciated and been in the news a lot. It was nominated for the Oscars and moved the viewers to tears. Tom Ford most definitely deserves his place in the Time 100 but we still feel that there are others in the fashion fraternity whose contribution has not been recognized. The people from the fashion community provide the clothes and are hence connected to the entire population on this earth. There are many in the community who are adding value in terms of business or design or welfare. We can only hope that Time Magazine will see the real worth of the fashion fraternity next year.
