The big fat Indian wedding just got bigger. Delhi-based businessman and Congress party member Kanwar Singh Tanwar has apparently spent several crores on his son Lalit’s wedding to Yogita Jaunapuria. Although Tanwar’s secretary confirmed that several crores had been spent, he also admitted that the total expenditure could only be calculated once the wedding celebrations came to a complete end. As of now, commentators are saying that this could be the most lavish wedding in recent history. There is a good chance that the Tanwar family wedding could have cost more than that of Britain’s richest man Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter’s wedding.
A quick glance at the wedding should offer a fair inkling into the level of ostentation at this £14 million wedding. The bride’s family gifted the groom a Bell 429 helicopter, plus a silver model of the aircraft. The groom arrived for his wedding in a top-end BMW. And his arrival was beamed to 18,000 guests over giant screens as they waited on the grounds of a palace in Rajasthan.
Over a thousand members of staff served up some hundred different dishes. Even for dessert, there were some 30 flavours of kulfi ice creams. Then there were the return gifts. Apparently, each guest took home a shawl, a garment set, a silver coin and over £30 in cash. Rumour has it that a local barber managed a £2,000 tip.
However, this display of wealth has not gone down well with the Congress party. Earlier, party president Sonia Gandhi had criticised vulgar displays of wealth. Party leader Mani Shankar Aiyar admitted that such ostentation were better avoided because it sent wrong signals about the political party to the common man.
