Art works by great masters have a tendency to surprise art lovers at auctions.  Recently a self-portrait by Andy Warhol was auctioned by Christie’s. The self portrait was ultimately sold for 10.8 million pounds, which is equivalent to almost $17 million.  The price the art work fetched is almost double of the pre sale estimates made at the London auction. The portrait is one of a series of 11 self portraits made by Warhol.
Christie’s, who conducted the auctions, said that the celebrated work by Andy Warhol had been in a private collection since 1974. After all these years the important work by the artist has surfaced and perhaps that’s why could command such a good price. The image is created in red and white silkscreen ink on canvas. The portrait shows the artist with his hand to his mouth.
This particular work was created in 1967 when Warhol was at the peak of his career. At the time he was amongst the most important figures in American pop art. It was not immediately clear as to who bought the art work. As per the statement of a Christie’s official the portrait was bought by an anonymous bidder in its London auction room on Wednesday. Hopefully it will not take another forty years before it surfaces again.
