Karl Lagerfeld, the German fashion icon, has been in the news recently for shooting the latest Pirelli calendar. But he is not a name that you associate with automobiles. His field of expertise is fashion and photography and he is often in the news for his activity in those fields. But this time he is in the news because of cars. Volkswagen has got him to design and promote a new trim line.
Volkswagen has released two Style packages for its Polo, Golf, Golf Plus and Golf Variant and Karl Lagerfeld is promoting it in their commercials as well as its spokesman. The packages actually save customers money as the Style package has extra equipment to the value of €3,200. The limited edition models feature alloy wheels, fog lamps, tinted side and rear windows and a winter accessory. The Style Plus package has an added sunroof.
The commercial shot with Lagerfeld in the lead is a reverse take off on Citroen C5 campaign which refers to the car being very ‘German’. The Volkswagen ad shows Lagerfeld pondering how stylish the new models are, and assumes that they are French. Lagerfeld plays himself in the ad, though he did not contribute creatively in the making of the commercial.
