Even in the times of the credit crunch, the world of precious jewels is rather upbeat these days. Reason? Well, a rare and flawless cushion-shaped blue diamond has asked the world to sit up and take notice. With an expected price ranging between $5.8 million and $8.5 million (£4.1m to £5.9m), this one means big bucks.
Going up on auction at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva on May 12, the diamond is still nameless. In fact, it has been decided that the final buyer will get the golden chance of naming this one. Here is a little history on this blue ice. Discovered at Petra Diamonds’ Cullian diamond mine in South Africa, this one is 7.03ct and has been cut from a 26.58ct rough stone.

A deep analysis at the jewelry market today would show you the signs of weakness but then also the latest tip in the market proved to be really strong. Pictured above is a 13.39 carat stunner that got sold off at Geneva-based Christie’s breaking the world record at $8.9 million. I reckon you would agree with me that such blue diamonds are rarely found. The stone is a type IIb diamond and such diamonds are only valued by jewelry lovers or collectors.
They surround small amounts of boron that gives them their return in the form of elegant shade. Another worth pointing feature is their property of being semi-conductors they conduct electricity. The auction generated total sales of $48.3 million.

Besides this another gold Rolex known as “Oyster Daytona Paul Newman” dating back to 1980 got sold for £76,000 almost two-fold of its pre-auction estimate of £25,000 to £40,000. The latest Swiss luxury watch called “Aviator,” has created the latest buzz in the market. Designed and developed by Yeslam Bin Ladin, half-brother of Osama Bin Ladin, this one is the first ever watch to enable pilots monitor their accurate airspeed when electronic mechanism stops functioning. Being pilot by profession, the face and dial of this timepiece is imprinted with fan blades and will surely prove to be a blessing for pilots. Agreed, planes these days come with built-in flight computer that keeps the track of airspeed, but at the same time a fact cannot be denied that electronic breakdowns also happen frequently and Yeslam makes this statement confidently as he has logged more than 3,500 hours of flight time. The watch also enables to guesstimate a flight’s interval before take-off.
Yeslam is running a luxury goods store in Geneva for past four years and also deals into perfume and handbags. The Aviator is anticipated to hit the market in coming months at a retail price of $9,472-$24,430, depending upon the steel version or white or rose gold edition.
